A SPECIAL EVENT ON JUNE 28:
   THE COAL VALLEY PADDLE
      ON THE DEEP RIVER
    Those who think of Chatham County only as an agricultural Eden may be shocked to learn that the hopes and dreams (and schemes) of 19th century industrialists once played out here — literally, when iron ore veins at Buckhorn withered. Yes, it may be hard to believe, but at one time Pittsboro was on its way to being Pittsburgh of the South.
   We'll paddle the flat waters from Deep River Park to U.S. 15-501, along the way hearing fascinating stories of coal mines, mining disasters, iron smelting and the decades-long attempt to turn the Deep into a watery super highway. Along the way we'll stop for a lunch and look and learn during a visit to the Endor Iron Furnace.
   Fee: $35 per person, or $25 per person for TLC members.
